Wow, I had no idea that dealing with secure boot was this much hard work! Hopefully the process will be simplified by the next LTS release of Ubuntu in April. I'm a bit surprised that your lab didn't insist on Windows 7 with new machines, given what a bad reputation Windows 8 has in enterprise environments.
Sounds like you guys are doing some fairly heavy duty number-crunching by the way — I've never heard of a desktop computer “needing” 100GB of drive space and 16GB of swap before!
